Title: BERT, GPT and their applications to Natural Language Processing

Abstract: Since the introduction of the Transformer architecture in 
2017, many deep learning models based on it, including BERT and GPT, 
have revolutionized artificial intelligence especially in natural 
language processing domains. Specifically, the pretraining and 
fine-tuning paradigm of BERT, the generative model approach and the 
reinforcement learning from human feedback method in GPT models have 
been very successful. In this talk, I will present the main ideas, 
structures, and the training methods of BERT and GPT, along with their 
applications to natural language processing and data analysis problems. 
Then I will present my recent work in language processing and related 
areas.

Kyomin Jung is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer 
Engineering, Seoul National University (SNU) and an adjunct Professor in 
the Department of Mathematical Sciences at SNU. He received a B.S. 
degree in Mathematics from SNU in 2003 and a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics 
from MIT in 2009. Before joining SNU in 2013, he was an Assistant 
Professor in the Department of Computer Science at KAIST. He is a 
recipient of the 2021 IEEE ICDM 10-Year Highest-Impact Paper Award and 
the 2023 Sinyang Academic Award for Engineering from SNU College of 
Engineering. In 1995, he won a gold medal at the International 
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). He served as an Associate Editor for 
Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS), and has been Senior TPC and 
TPC members for leading conferences in machine learning and natural 
language processing including ICML, ACL, AAAI, and EMNLP. His research 
interests include language models, dialog systems, and multimodal data 
analysis. He is currently visiting the Max Planck Institute for Security 
and Privacy (MPI-SP) in Bochum during his sabbatical year.
