[AI-announce] Master's thesis with ALDI DX: Machine Learning for Inventory-Level Prediction

Dear students of the faculty,

I'd like to point out an interesting opportunity for writing a Master's 
thesis in collaboration withALDI DX <https://it-jobs.aldi-sued.de/>, the 
digital branch of ALDI Süd.
This might be particularly interesting for those of you considering a 
career as Data Scientist or Data Engineer.


      Master's topic: Machine Learning for Inventory-Level Prediction

In large-scale retail, knowing the correct inventory levels of your 
products at any time is crucial. It allows stores to order just the 
right amount at just the right time, thereby increasing efficiency and 
decreasing waste. It turns out that this is a really hard problem -- 
products get stolen, broken or are simply miscounted -- and the recorded 
levels tend to drift away from the real numbers.

This project is about applying machine learning methods to counteract 
this. The idea is to use the the data that ALDI has available to either 
detect situations in which the drift is likely very large, possibly 
triggering a manual recount, or to train a Bayesian neural network to 
get an accurate prediction of the current inventory level.

Additional info:

  * You will be co-advised by experienced data workers at ALDI DX and by
    me.
  * You'll work with real data provided by ALDI's supply chain
    management: Possibly a non-disclosure agreement
    (Geheimhaltungsvereinbarung) has to be signed.
  * You will get a contract from ALDI for the time you are working on
    the thesis. Likely, this will be a 20h/week contract for the whole
    six months.

Requirements:

  * General technical aptitude
  * Good coding skills (project will be Python-based)
  * Previous exposure to Machine Learning would be helpful, but is not
    necessary.
