PhD-Position in numerical modelling of stress and strain in the lithosphere

The Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics of the
Ruhr-University of Bochum seeks a talented Ph.D. candidate to
participate in an exciting research project investigating geodynamic
processes and structures of the Hellenic subduction zone. The PhD
position is part of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 526
„Rheology of the Earth - From the Upper Crust to the Subduction Zone“.
The position should be filled as soon as possible and is limited to a
period ending June 2008 with a possible extension for 3 more years.

The CRC 526 consists of different projects in the field of engineering
and geosciences. The work of the Ph.D. candidate consists of numerical
modelling of dynamic processes within the Hellenic subduction zone to
investigate inter-plate earthquake, subduction processes, and the
interaction with the regional deformation and stress field. The project
seeks to investigate the influence of different rheological parameters.
Rheological parameters like viscosity and plasticity influence the
deformation, stress state, and the mechanical interaction between the
subducting and overriding plates in a subduction zone. Numerical
modelling should be performed to identify relevant dynamic processes and
to quantify the relation between rheological parameters and observables
like seismicity, gravity, topography, or deformation. Particular targets
of the project are (1) inter-plate coupling and the generation of large
inter-plate earthquakes, (2) the role of density heterogeneities and
topography in the deformation process, and (3) stress transfer along and
between faults and earthquake triggering. The project is closely linked
to seismological studies to reveal the structure of the Hellenic
subduction zone and the model should be tied in with results of other
projects within CRC 526.

The position is ideal for geoscientists or physicists with a diploma or
master degree who have an active interest in multidisciplinary research
in a strong research group. Experience in using finite element software
(preferable Abaqus) would be of advantage. The position is open until
filled. The Ruhr-University Bochum is an equal opportunity employer and
encourages women to apply.
