Dear Colleagues,

The 3rd World Stress Map Project conference "Frontiers of Stress
Research - Observation, Integration, Application" will be held at the
GFZ Potsdam from October 15-17, 2008
(www.world-stress-map.org/conference). This conference will be
accompanied by a similarly-themed special issue of Tectonophysics and we
would like you to consider submitting a paper for this special issue.
Topics of the special issue are:

I. Observation
- stress, strain, and strength of the lithosphere
- stress measurement techniques (including stress magnitudes and
  palaeostress analysis)
- observations of strain accumulation and strain release on different
  temporal and spatial scales
- impact of geological and rheological structure of the lithosphere on
  the stress field

II. Integration and Modelling
- modelling of stress and strain in the lithosphere
- time- and scale-dependent deformation processes
- modelling of the absolute stress state and its changes with time
  (inter-, co-, and postseismic)
- simulation of fracture propagation, fluid flow,
  and pore pressure variations

III. Application
- geomechanics for petroleum and geothermal reservoirs
- stability aspects of underground openings
- seismic hazard assessment

Submission deadline of a tentative title, a short abstract, and the list
of authors is April 30th 2008, the deadline for submission of the full
paper will be August 15th. If you are interested in contributing to this
special issue, please send an e-mail to Oliver Heidbach. Please note
that contribution to the special issue is not restricted to the
participants of the conference, but open to the stress research
community.

After acceptance of your contribution on May 15th, there will be 3
months for submission of the manuscripts, approximately 2 months for the
review period, and another month for revising manuscripts. Elsevier has
stated they would like to see the issue published before the end of
2008. As the submission procedure is fully within the online submission
system of Elsevier, there will be no delay in online publication of each
individual contribution after final acceptance.

Please feel free to pass this message on to any of your colleagues
that you feel may be interested. If you have any questions, please do
not hesitate to send an e-mail to one of the editors.
