Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming worldwide Simulia community conference in Berlin. Dassault Systemes Simulia, the maker of Abaqus, is hosting this conference once a year at changing locations, and in Berlin, 2015, geomechanics will be a prominent focus of this conference.

As you may have noticed, a lot of new features and enhancements have been introduced into Abaqus in the last years that are specifically geared towards geomechanics applications. Take XFEM, for example: This numerical technique that allows cracks to initiate and propagate through elements in arbitrary, solution-dependent directions, independently of the finite element mesh layout, was received with interest and many useful suggestions for futher development, when I made a presentation on its capabilites in Abaqus 6.12 at the Geoqus conference in Potsdam in 2012. Starting with Abaqus 6.13, it became possible to apply pressure loads on the propagating crack surfaces, a feature requested by many Geoqus conference participants to improve XFEM applicability to fracking simulations. With today's Abaqus 6.14 it is now possible to use XFEM in a fully coupled displacement - pore fluid flow analysis (*soils), where the continuity equation for the fluid in the crack is satisfied both tangentially and perpendicularly to the crack (pore fluid exchange between porous rock and crack volume).

These and other improvements to Abaqus have been part of a geomechanics R&D initiative of Dassault Systemes Simulia in cooperation with customers from the oil and gas industry. This multi-year, ongoing large-scale development project, as well as geomechanics in general, will be prominently featured during this year's worldwide Simulia community conference. Our geomechanics focus will comprise:
    - a keynote lecture by a research cooperation partner from the oil and gas industry,
    - a full-day technology seminar on geomechanics on Monday ("training day"), given by Simulia experts
    - a further full-day technology seminar on fracture mechanics and XFEM on Monday ("training day"), given by Simulia experts,
    - "Geo super track" on Wednesday: a full day of gemechanics conference paper presentations in one of the parallel sessions.

In addition to the conference participants' presentations, the conference format includes the following, amoung other things:
    - An academic poster session (poster submission still open).
    - Special sessions on new features in Simulia products (Abaqus and others).
    - "Meet the Experts" - 30-minute sessions in which Simulia experts are ready to be grilled on selected simulation topics.
    - "Make an Appointment" - conference attendees can request a one-on-one appointment with a Simulia expert to discuss specific simulation issues by specifying their field of interest at the conference desk. We will then match you with one of the Simulia experts for an appointment. This would be a good opportunity e.g. to present a list of enhancement requests from the field of geophysics/geomechanics to our developers and personally explain the relevance to the right person.
    - "Support Desk" - personal real-time user support.
    - "Early-Bird Hands-on" - An opportunity to test-drive our new 3DExperience platform, our next-generation software, while guided by experienced hands from the Simulia field support team.

Please have a look at www.3ds.com/events/simulia-community-conference for more information. Please note also the early-bird discounts ending January 31, 2015 and the discounts for academic participants and poster authors.

Since geomechanics will be such an important part of the Simulia community conference this year, we would be very happy to welcome a strong party of researchers, analysts, engineers and students from the field of geophysics and geomechanics in Berlin. You are invited to participate, give us feedback, make yourself heard, and enjoy the unique atmosphere of a conference with participants from many fields, using common tools.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jens Lüke
