Abstract

Pervasive computing describes the notion that computing devices will be
everywhere: clothing, cars, farm fields, buildings, etc. This idea is now
becoming a reality. RFIDs are currently being introduced into the supply
chain. Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are already being used to monitor
wildlife and to track military targets. WSN and RFIDs are going to form an
important part of our infrastructure. Security is a critical factor for in
many of their application due to their impact on privacy trust and control.
Wireless sensor nodes as well as RFID tags have very limited power
resources. Currently these devices are struggling with the load of running
cryptographic algorithms implemented in software. The severe power
constraints make hardware implementations seem promising.

This presentation gives an introduction to the specific problems that
security engineers face when they try to solve the seemingly contradictory
challenge of providing lightweight cryptographic services that can perform
on ultra-low power devices. We present our early results on implementing
hash functions as well as our recent results showing that even public key
algorithms can be implemented for ultra-low power devices.
