Security related issues of SCTP
Abstract
The Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) is a new general
purpose transport protocol which has been developed by the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF). It was designed to transport
Signalling System No. 7 (SS7) messages, which are used for
telephony signalling, over IP networks. Because SS7 networks have
very strict reliability and performance requirements, SCTP provides
special features to provide network fault tolerance.
The talk will give an overview about SCTP and the procedures
providing network fault tolerance. The currently known threats of
the original version of SCTP will be presented and counter
measures, including new protocol features, will be discussed. The
extension of dynamic address reconfiguration requires a new
protocol extension to authenticate chunks. This SCTP authentication
will also be covered. Finally an overview about future security
related SCTP developments will be given.
