CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The Horst Görtz Institute for IT-Security is pleased to announce the
next SecHuman Summer School:

3rd SecHuman Summer School – Brave New World: Security for Humans in
Cyberspace
June 3 – 6, 2019, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany

https://sechumansummerschool.blogs.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/

The Summer School addresses young researchers interested in inter- and
transdisciplinary questions in modern cybersecurity. In recent years, IT
security and privacy have become increasingly important topics for
society as a whole. Since both subject areas rise important legal,
social and technological questions, it is necessary to dovetail
different disciplines. An interdisciplinary approach to cybersecurity
will enable us to solve current and future challenges for individuals,
businesses and governments. This Summer School presents the
interdisciplinary research areas that are investigated in the NRW PhD
school SecHuman – Security for Humans in Cyberspace, condenses them into
a four-day event and opens them to a broad audience.

Guided by top international researchers, you will get a fresh look at
modern cybersecurity from different perspectives: An introductory
workshop on Day 1 will provide you with tools for innovative inter- and
transdisciplinary research. After that, cybersecurity is introduced as a
social, mediated and technical phenomenon. Day 2 covers the
quantification of security from the perspectives of human aspects,
cryptography, and reverse engineering. Talks will be given by experts
from these areas and participant can work jointly on interactive
assignments. Day 3 focuses on forensic linguistics as the interface
between language, law and crime. Finally, Day 4 investigates how privacy
is at odds with both the data economy and user convenience – and if it
is possible to overcome these conflicts. Business models of web and
mobile apps often rely on monetization via ads specifically targeted at
the user’s interests. On the other hand, users can benefit if the
service offers improved usability and personalization based on their
habits and preferences.

The lectures of the experts are kept relatively short to ensure that
there is enough time to discuss and develop your own ideas. Also, as a
participant, you will have the opportunity to present and discuss your
own research ideas. Of course, there will be a daily social program
which is not only fun but will also allow to build networks with
like-minded reseachers.

The summer school will be held in English.
