Das interdisziplinäre Team des Horst Görtz Instituts für IT-Sicherheit rekonstruierte und knackte die Verschlüsselungsalgorithmen A5-GMR-1 und A5-GMR-2 für Satellitentelefone und deckte erhebliche Schwachstellen auf. Der Best Paper Award ist die Auszeichnung für den besten und relevantesten, wissenschaftlichen Beitrag des Symposiums. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Bereits im Februar und März 2012 erregten Benedikt Driessen, Thorsten Holz, Ralf Hund, Christof Paar und Carsten Willems vom Horst Görtz Institut für IT-Sicherheit (HGI) enormes Aufsehen in den internationalen und nationalen Medien, denn die bis dahin unbekannten Verschlüsselungsalgorithmen des European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) galten als sicher. Alternativen zu den bisherigen Standards gibt es derzeit nicht. Mit dem Brechen der Sicherheitsstandards machten die Forscher den Bedarf an neuen Verschlüsselungsverfahren deutlich.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Das Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) ist mit mehr als 400.000 Mitgliedern der größte technische Berufsverband der Welt. Er ist im Bereich Elektro- und Informationstechnik aktiv. IEEE Konferenzen haben besonders hohe Anforderungen an wissenschaftliche Beiträge. Beim IEEE Symposium on Security & Privacy werden jährlich mehrere hundert Beiträge eingereicht, aber nur 10-15 Prozent werden akzeptiert.
