Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Award 2011 for Professor Thorsten Holz
===========================================================
Professor Thorsten Holz of the Horst Görtz Institute receives the
renowned Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Award 2011. This prize is being awarded
annually by the German Research Association DFG and recognizes young
scientists for their outstanding research. Professor Holz's work on
security threads and developement of defence mechanisms combines
original scientific research with broad expertise regarding technical
details of malicious software and receives international acceptance.
Further information can be found on
http://www.dfg.de/service/presse/pressemitteilungen/2011/pressemitteilung_nr_09/index.html

Tim Güneysu new professor at the HGI
====================================
Prof. Tim Güneysu became assistant professor in February 2011 and is now
extending the expertise of the HGI with his Research Group “Secure
Hardware”. His research covers the implementation of cryptographic
systems on embedded and alternative platforms as well as the development
of optimal computer systems for cryptoanalysis. He also focuses on
security concepts for hardware based embedded systems like secure key
memories and identification of components. For more information about
his research activities, see
http://www.emsec.rub.de/chair/_staff/tim_gueneysu/

IT security events
==================
- 27 May 2011 job fair ITS.Connect 2011
- 15 - 18 June 2011 CryptArchi Workshop
- 28 - 29 July 2011 Ecrypt II-MAYA Workshop
- October 2011 10 years of HGI

All events will take place in Bochum.

HGI well represented at Eurocrypt 2011
======================================
Again, the Horst Görtz Institute shows strong presence at the largest
conference on cryptography, Eurocrypt 2011. Out of a total of 30
accepted papers 4 have been submitted by HGI members. Moreover, Prof.
Eike Kiltz has - as in 2009 and 2010 - been awarded "Best Paper Award".
The acceptance rate for papers was about 17% in the last few years. This
year's Eurocrypt will take place on May 15-19 in Tallin (Estonia).
Further information on the conference can be found on the following
website: http://www.iacr.org/conferences/eurocrypt2011/accepted.php

More than 80 participants at SPRING and Kryptotag
==================================================
With more than 80 participants the joint workshops SPRING and Kryptotag
have been a great success. SPRING aims at young academics working in the
area of reactive IT security, whereas Kryptotag gathers people from
cryptography. Both workshops took place on March 21-22. Abstracts of the
talks, as well as slides and pictures of the event can be found at
http://www1.hgi.rub.de/spring/Program.html and
http://www1.hgi.rub.de/kryptotag/#programm. Both workshops have been
organized by the HGI research groups LTS, EMMA and CITS:

4th job fair ITS.Connect 2011
=============================
The job fair ITS.Connect offers great opportunities for graduates and
students in IT security or similar subjects to get in contact with
leading ITS companies. This year 22 companies present themselves at the
fair and offer jobs, internships, and projects for theses. Furthermore
there will be talks by alumni passing on their experience with starting
a professional career. More information on http://www.hgi.rub.de/itsconnect/

Amazon Web Services Research Grant
==================================
Within the framework of the "AWS (Amazon Web services) in Education
Programme" which provides grants for teaching and research Dominik Birk
from the Horst Görtz Institute has received an "AWS in Education
Research Grant" for his work on "Cloud Computing Forensics". This grant
enables him to take advantage of free usage credits to tap into the
on-demand infrastructure of AWS and to use them for his research
regarding the feasability of forensic investigations in the Amazon Cloud
settings. The results will be of interest for clients of cloud services
as well as for Amazon itself.
