Quantum Quest 2023: Registration Open for Online Course

Cluster of Excellence CASA sponsors online course for students in upper grades on the topic of quantum computing.

The quantum computer is a computer of the future. Instead of working with bits that have two states (0 and 1), quantum computers operate using quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in an infinite number of possible states. This enables them to solve specific challenging problems much faster than traditional computers. In doing so, they pave the way for new scientific achievements. Researchers at universities and in the industry are working on building this fascinating device.

Diving into the World of Quantum Informatics
But how does a quantum computer actually work, and how can it be programmed? Students can learn about this in the free online course "Quantum Quest", which is jointly organized this year by the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Cluster of Excellence CASA in cooperation with the University of Amsterdam and the QuSoft Center there. The goal is for students to grasp the fundamentals of quantum informatics after successful participation. In 2018, 2020 and 2021, students* from around the world participated to learn the mathematics behind quantum computers. Prof. Michael Walter, the organizer of the course, invites high school students - especially from Germany - to participate in this year's Quantum Quest:
"I am very pleased that we can offer the Quantum Quest to students at German schools this year. Everyone who enjoys mathematical puzzles is in the right place to dive into the world of quantum computing with us."
The course starts on October 30, 2023, and concludes on December 15, 2023.

Schedule and Structure of the Online Course
Each week, a chapter ("Quest") is covered, supported by online meetings. These meetings introduce learning materials, discuss assignments, and provide space for questions and tips. They are streamed online and also recorded so that participants can view the videos at any time. In addition, a meeting will be held in a hybrid format. Co-organizer Dr. Simon Schmidt says, "Those who live nearby are welcome to attend locally at Ruhr University Bochum or the University of Amsterdam!" The materials are already available in English and Dutch - a German translation is planned. Interactions take place in English, Dutch and German. More info can be found here: https://www.quantum-quest.org/de/calendar

Registration and Participation
Until October 13, it is possible to register online for participation. Two options are available:
1. teachers of senior classes can enroll their entire class, or
2. individual students (aged 16-20) from around the world can register individually.
Throughout the course, communication will take place via the Discord chat platform. Participants can engage in discussions, and live Q&A sessions will be offered. All participants will receive a certificate upon course completion.
