The interdisciplinary Team of the HGI reconstructed and broke the encryption algorithms A5-GMR-1 and A5-GMR-2 for Satphones and uncovered significant weaknesses. The Best Paper Award is given for the most relevant, scientific paper.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>Since February 2012 Benedikt Driessen, Thorsten Holz, Ralf Hund, Christof Paar and Carsten Willems reached extensive media attention in Germany and worldwide. Up to this time the unknown encryption algorithm A5-GMR1 and A5-GMR-2 of the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) considered to be safe. At the moment there are no alternative algorithms. With their results the HGI-scientists demonstrated the demand for new encryption algorithms.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>With more than 400,000 members the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest professional, technical association. IEEE conferences call for an exceptionally high level of scientific quality of papers. Every year several hundred papers are submitted to the IEEE Symposium on Security & Privacy but only 10-15 per cent were accepted.
