RUB bereits jetzt recht unattraktiv macht.
aktuellem Stand bald verlassen muss.
betonen, dass dieser Fachbereich für viele Menschen große Relevanz hat;
scheint einfach nichts anzukommen.
Hochachtungsvoll,
i.A. der Fachschaften,
die Fachschaftsräte Angewandte Informatik, Informatik und IT-Sicherheit

Dear Members of the Faculty,
we, the Student Councils, would like to raise our concerns regarding the
current course of our faculty.
We are aware of the fact that our faculty is still in development and
that many of the things we are about to criticize are subject to change.
However, taking into consideration that this process has been unfolding
for more than a year, we would still like to draw an interim conclusion
and issue a word of caution.
Students enrolled in AI or CS face a severe lack of opportunities for
specialization, which makes studying at the RUB quite unappealing. There
is a lot of concern regarding the lack of practical experience in our
courses of study. Courses are being disputed, subjected to heavy change,
or being held more out of necessity than passion. We all are
encountering a lot of inconveniences while being promised change for the
better. Unfortunately, at the moment it seems to us like the situation
is being mishandled, prompting us to voice our concerns. We think the
faculty is about to harm itself, instead of finally making progress.
In particular we want to address the proceedings around Daniel Vonk, who
has, among other things, held the lecture "Game Development in C#" for
the past five years, but might be forced to leave us soon. This is
extremely regrettable considering that about 120 students (including
students from other faculties) have taken the exam for this lecture in
the past year, providing them with an applicable introduction to
industry-standard tools like C#, Git and Unity, while raking in
overwhelmingly positive reviews along the way. The reviews are so
positive, in fact, that the Faculty is happily using this lecture as a
marketing tool. When applicants are choosing between Bochum, Essen, and
Dortmund, Game Development is a factor in funnelling applicants our way.
Yet, instead of expanding on this factor of differentiation, the faculty
seems to favour cutting corners instead. With all due respect, we are
unable to find a different explanation for the behaviour we are
currently observing.
Not only is a whole area of specialization about to be discontinued, but
also a skilled, dedicated and most importantly urgently needed lecturer
is about to be lost to us. To thank him for his dedication by turning
him away and in turn keeping younger students from ever taking part in a
lecture heavily advertised to them is, in our opinion, not only an
utterly stupid deal, but also highly reprehensible and frankly
unacceptable - especially considering that preventing this is still
entirely possible, and given that the problem at hand has been
foreseeable for quite a while at this point.
We have been dealing with this matter for several years now and were put
off time and time again. Fearing that this issue is being ignored once
more, we want to stress that this lecture provides substantial, domain
spanning, applicable knowledge and experience, in an approachable and
engaging way. It and its associated domain are of significant importance
to us and worth expanding upon. That is why we have been pleading to at
least use the talent and expertise already at our disposal for a long
time now - apparently in vain. In our honest opinion, this is nothing
short of a massive breach of trust.
We hope that this message can facilitate change. The faculty is on track
to make a mistake; not just the mistake of cancelling one lecture that
happens to be important to us, but a very prevalent one: The mistake of
not even considering the majority of stakeholders, yet making a decision
with significant consequences for them.
That said, in this specific instance we firmly believe there will be no
victors at all if the faculty stays on its current course. In case
someone is still unconvinced of the gravity of the situation, please see
the attached results of a survey carried out by the student council of
AI some time ago. We would of course be happy to repeat it for a broader
audience. Moreover, we are proud to announce that AI's Game Jam will
once again start with over 30 entries from all over the campus and
beyond today, again proving the overwhelming interest in the topic. More
information regarding this is also attached.
As always, we remain dedicated to our task and open for discussion.
Respectfully,
on behalf of the Student Bodies,
the Student Councils of Applied Computer Science, Computer Science and
IT-Security
