Assistant Professorship in Computational Biology, University of
Southern
Denmark, Odense
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
<http://www.sdu.dk/en/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/Bmb_biokemi_og_molekylaer_biologi.aspx
>
at the Faculty of Science, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is
seeking
to recruit an assistant professor within the area of computational
biology.
Candidates with interests in bioinformatics, integrative systems biology
and other areas of computational biology are encouraged to apply.
This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding young investigator to
play a leading role in advancing the computational biology and
bioformatics
research and education programmes at a leading Danish university. We are
particularly interested in recruiting an investigator with a research
programme that complements or expands our current activities.
*Requirements and Expectations*
*Research.* The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD degree
in a
relevant field, several years of postdoctoral experience, and a research
profile in computational biology as documented by publications in
premier
international journals. He/she must have an ambition to advance
computational biology and bioinformatics research by establishing a
dynamic, creative and internationally oriented research group and
attract
external research funding. Assistant professors are expected to
qualify for
an associate professorship within three years of employment.
*Teaching.* The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate
and
graduate teaching in bioinformatics, computational biology, biochemistry
and molecular biology and related topics. This will also include
supervision of students for bachelor and master projects. In addition,
the
assistant professor is eventually expected to supervise PhD students and
postdocs.
*What can SDU offer*
SDU has a strong tradition of collaboration between the Faculty of
Science
and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Biochemistry, molecular cell
biology,
and biomedicine spanning basic biology to clinical physiological studies
are prioritized areas at University of Southern Denmark and Odense
University Hospital (OUH). Areas of particular interest at SDU/OUH
include
1) metabolism and metabolic diseases, including diabetes; 2) pathogenic
bacteria and antibiotics resistance; 3) cell cycle regulation and cancer
biology; 4) protein structure, interaction and function, including
disease
mechanisms; 5) membrane biology and biophysics; 6) functional
proteomics,
cell signalling networks and epigenetic regulation; 7) molecular
mechanisms
of aging; 8) RNA-biology, in particular aberrant post transcriptional
processing in inherited disease; 9) lipid biochemistry and lipidomics.
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) has a staff of 25
tenured investigators. BMB has long standing strengths in the fields of
molecular mechanisms of cellular metabolism, differentiation and
regulatory
networks, including transcriptional and post-transcriptional
mechanisms of
regulation. The department is well-known internationally for its top
level
proteomics and biological mass spectrometry research. Other strong
enabling
technologies include next generation sequencing, metabolomics/
lipidomics,
bioimaging, and biocomputing. A recent major infrastructure grant from
the
VILLUM Foundation to establish the VILLUM Center for Bioanalytical
Sciences
<http://www.sdu.dk/en/om_sdu/institutter_centre/c_villum_bio_sci> made
it
possible to upgrade to the most advanced equipment in all these fields.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Science is hosting the Danish Molecular
Biomedical Imaging Center <http://www.dambic.dk/>, a national centre for
bioimaging.
The successful candidate will have direct access to this unique
combination
of high powered omics platforms and advanced bioimaging technologies.
The
laboratories of the department will be completely renovated during the
next three years, providing a modern infrastructure for top-level
research
and teaching.
Applications must reach us no later than 15 September 2015.
Expected starting date: 1 May 2016, or soon thereafter.
For further information please contact Head of Department, Professor Ole
Nørregaard Jensen (e-mail: jenseno at bmb.sdu.dk, phone +45 6550 2368).
*Application, salary etc.*
Appointment to the position will be in accordance with the salary
agreement
between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of
Professional Associations. Applications will be assessed by an expert
committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the
university.
The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae
• A full list of publications indicating the five most important
publications
• Copies of all publications on which the applicant wishes to be
evaluated
• A brief survey of the applicant's most important research results and
research plans for the next three years.
• Description of previous research including research management and
research grants (1 page)
• Description of teaching experience
• Outline of how the applicant’s future research strategy would build on
current research, identifying how it would complement existing
research in
the SDU Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (no more than
four
pages)
Please note that applicants are expected to have completed their PhD.
The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of
age, gender, religious affiliation, or ethnic background.
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link below.
Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only
contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. Please read How to apply
